AzRC Tucson summer member meeting recap
The Arizona Recycling Coalition (AzRC) held its annual summer meeting on Friday, June 2, at Brother John’s Beer, Bourbon & BBQ in Tucson.
Members and nonmembers from the public and private sectors and several students attended the meeting to network, get recycling industry updates, and listen to Barbara Eisworth, Executive Director of the Iskashitaa Refugee Network.
At the meeting, it was announced that AzRC would be opening its grant and scholarship applications soon — stay tuned for future updates. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality also announced its upcoming recycling grant program offering $500,000 in grant monies yearly.
These exciting announcements were followed by our guest speaker Barbara, who shared her expertise on food waste in Arizona. She shared that Arizona is the state that wastes the most food in the United States, and 30-40% of all food is wasted across the country.
Barbara encouraged attendees to “buy banana orphans” and advocate for the regular purchase of “misfit” produce. Even when it doesn’t look pristine, food can still be nutritious and delicious and should not go to waste.
As members of AzRC, we can work to combat food waste at home and in our professions. Thanks again to Barbara Eisworth and the Iskashitaa Refugee Network for the incredible work they do every day.
